Examinations in Non Destructive Testing are administered by the Certification
Board for Inspection Personnel (CBIP). You can view a list of disciplines in which the CBIP offers examinations.

Frequently asked questions relating to exams
- (Q) Who arranges the exam venue and invigilator?
- (A) The service contract with AINDT has not been renewed by CBIP. The NZNDTA have been advised by CBIP that they will be conducting all exams for the advertised October and November exam rounds .Please direct to enquiries to CBIP Secretary.
- (Q) Where do I find information relating to the exam paper format?
- (A) CBIP have not indicated what format their exams will take so please direct any enquiries to CBIP Secretary.
- (Q) What reference material am I allowed to take into the exam?
- (A) For NDT exams refer to the CBIP secretary. For non-NDT exams, refer to "non- NDT disciplines" reference material on the CBIP web site.
- (Q) How and when are exam results issued?
- (A) CBIP have advised that they will be managing the whole examination process for the next round of exams, please direct any enquiries to CBIP Secretary
- (Q) Am I allowed to take my own equipment for the practical exams?
- (A) It is allowable to take your own equipment such as portable yokes, penetrant equipment, ultrasonic machines and radiographic inspection tool kits. All major items of equipment such as MT bench units, X-ray machines and gamma units (if required) will be provided at the venue.
- (Q) Will my NDT certification be ISO 9712 / 17024 endorsed in the future?
- (A) The Department of Labour have given CBIP funding of $135,000 to assist with continuing to provide certification services as well as establish an ISO 9712 accredited examination scheme under ISO 17024. Please refer to the CBIP News web page for details of progress toward these targets.
- (Q) Where do I send my exam application form to and what is the correct form to use?
- (A) CBIP have not advised any details of this to date so please visit CBIP Certifications web page for updated details.
- (Q) What are the current fees payable now that the AINDT / CBIP service contract is no longer in force?
- (A) CBIP have not advised any different fee structure however it is unclear if the application fee is still applicable. Please visit CBIP Certifications web page for any new advertised fees.
- (Q) Who should I contact regarding the exam coordination now that the AINDT / CBIP has been deactivated?
- (A) The NZNDTA has offered to continue providing this function directly to CBIP in the future but we have been advised that CBIP will be arranging this function themselves. Please contact CBIP Secretary for details of exam timetables.
